Small Business Growth Online

1

Category : Business In General, General Thoughts, Marketing Advice, Small Businesses

internetA recent survey by the email marketing software provide Campaigner has shown that small businesses are invreasing turning to online methods to drive business growth.

Key survey findings were:

- 48% of the small businesses surveyed expeteced to generate higher revenues this year than 2008.

- Those businesses that are growing are investing more marketing funding in internet advertising, search engine marketing and other online tools.

- Overall, small businesses ar switching more of their marketing online and away from traditional advertising nad direct mail.

- The top online tools being used were social media and networking, email marketing and search engine marketing.

These results are not really surprising given the fact that these methods tend to be lower cost, although they do need more marketing expertise to implement. Given the success that larger businesses have had online, it is not surprising that SMEs should want to move into this area.

On a wider note, this is also an indication that more and more customers are using internet channels to select and buy products. There are very few markets where is it feasible to stay in business and not to have a credible online strategy.

Increased Marketing Investment

pound_signThere has been much focus here recently on the contrast between UK GDP figures and the outlook surveys from purchasing managers. The equivalent survey in marketing and advertising is the IPA Bellweather survey. In line with other surveys it shows some promising data – but only in patches.

The data that it published in October shows that although marketing spend has declined over eight consecutive quarters, the decline in the last quarter was the slowest yet. Of the companies surveyed, 47% indicated improved prospects.

Most advertising spend was down – above the line, below the line and PR – but internet advertising was up. This is the first overall increase since the second quarter of 2008. The increase was seen in both internet search marketing and internet advertising.

IT, financial services, industry and non-governmental services show declines in marketing spends, while retail, travel and entertainment indicated increasing investment. This is broadly in line with activity in the recruitment sector.

Like most commentators, the report is cautious on the future outlook. It indicates that while the decline in marketing budgets is slowing, clients remain cautious about the future and that this likely to limit the speed of any return to previous levels of investment.

Advertising Humour

Category : Online Business, Small Businesses

This advert for the RAV4 is not a classic by any means, but it is a funny execution of a common theme. A couple is shown waking up in a house with a RAV4 in the driveway and the gag is the competition between them to be the one to drive the car.

The execution does a but further than others because it shows the pair making some geniune efforts to hurt each other. This is in stark contrast to how comfortable their surroundings are – these two look like the couple who have everything. Playing along in the background is a “so happy together” soundtrack.

So nothing earth-shattering, just a good solid production getting the humour in without drowning out the product message.

Marketing Goodwill

Category : Business In General, General Thoughts, Small Businesses

scroogeThe jury is certainly still out at the moment. Markets that were quiet in the summer seem to have a bit more life in them, although money is still short and almost no one is investing large amounts of cash in anything.

The political class have taken the rising stock market and housing market to mean that their efforts at quantitative easing have been a huge success. Nearer to ground level it is clear that buying bonds is not getting cash into the real economy. Banks are re-building their balance sheets and are not lending to anybody. Larger businesses with access to international markets have been able to tap some capital, but the UK economy is 90% composed of businesses who do not have this access.

Many are critical of the figures from the ONS which show that the economy is still in recession, but that is mostly because they were wrong footed and were once again shown to be unable to forecast anything. The economic darlings were just getting back into a confident stride in the last few months and then this bombshell drops!

So what is the average small businessperson to make of the outlook. Some data that I saw this week indicated that those for whom the Christmas party market is an important season may be feeling the pinch. The florist, caterers and party organisers who do well in this market are noticing a significant drop in business.

For that reason we have decided to ask people who are looking at this decision to be as optimistic as you can and to remember that thanks that are due to staff for the hard work they are putting in under difficult circumstances. This is one decision where you should take a longer-term view and prioritise people over cash conservation.

God Defends Bankers Pay

Category : Business In General, Small Businesses

bankerI had  eureka moment yesterday – suddenly everything had become clear. What if bankers have become so powerful in the future, that they can afford to travel back in time to make sure that no one can reform their industry and curb their powers or their pay.

Like most mere mortals, I have been scratching my head recently wondering how they could have got away with it. They have ruined the economy, they have swallowed vast sums of public money and they have brought most small and medium sized enterprises to an investment  standstill. We will be paying back the money that kept them afloat for a generation. Yet, barely 12 months since the near meltdown, many of these genii are back in business again and in line to receive large bonuses. All this has been cheered on by a Labour Prime Minister and Chancellor!

Then I read this article about the Large Hadron Collider at Cern. Not only did it start with a whimper last year, but it has faced regular setbacks in it’s attempt to get going again. Now two respected physicists have postulated that perhaps the LHC is sabotaging itself from the future. It may seem like a strange idea, but if you have even dabbled in quantum mechanics or particle physics, then you will be already familiar with strange.

Then it struck me Sherlock. Eliminate the impossible and you are left with the answer. The issue is not that the bankers are trying it on again. It is that there is no credible attempt to stop them. The bankers are sabotaging any attempts at financial reform from the future in the same way that the LHC is stopping itself from working.

aliensI will admit to a few moments of self doubt, but then I saw todays papers. An ill-considered attack on the banks by Mervyn King (normally a thoughtful commentator) is followed immediately by a rebuff from Gordon and Alistair. There can be little further doubt – there are dark forces abroad!
